Y+ Global is pleased to announce the appointment of Maximina Jokonya as the HER Voice Fund Coordinator. She will be responsible for the management of HER Voice Fund to accelerate the leadership of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in the decision processes that affect their lives.
Working with youth and community led partners in the 13 Global Fund priority countries, the Coordinator will lead the representation and implementation of the HER Voice Fund.
Maximina has extensive experience in the field of HIV prevention, treatment, care and support with special focus on children, adolescents and young people in their diversity. For the past 8 years, she has been working tremendously at local, national, regional and international levels on gender equality and women’s empowerment, sexual reproductive health rights and youth development.
As she joins our dynamic team, Maximina brings a wealth of experience in integrated programme management, accountability, advocacy and youth leadership.
“Over the years, AGYW have been left behind and facing unprecedented barriers including logistical, administrative and language which further hinder meaningful involvement and participation. I believe AGYW in their entirety needs to be represented in policy and decision-making spaces in making sure that their issues are addressed.” – stated Maximina Jokonya, the incoming HER Voice Fund Coordinator.
AGYW are the face and force behind the HIV response. They are the solution makers, and architecture of the brilliant interventions that can cater for every individual according to their needs.
“If they cannot provide a seat at these decision-making processes, we will surely happy to bring a folded chair for ourselves.” she added.
For the past 6 years, Maximina worked as a Zvandiri Mentor for Africaid, which is best known for meaningfully involving adolescents and young people living with HIV at the forefront of differentiated care through the Zvandiri programme. During her time at Africaid, she collaborated with ATHENA Network which aims at advancing the recognition, protection, and fulfilment of women’s and girls’ human rights, comprehensively and inclusively, as a fundamental component of the response to HIV and AIDS. She was also part of a research programme in Zimbabwe, a member of the Community Delegation to the Global Fund, Women Deliver Young Leader, HIV Vaccine Trials Network Protocol community representative among other regional and international forums.
“We welcome Maximina at a time when Y+ Global is showing the world what young people can do as a force and a movement of their own lives. Having her on board at such crucial time is very important and we are confident that her skills and expertise will not benefit us as an organization only but the world at large in the HIV response.” – Cedric Nininahazwe, Y+ Global Programmes Manager.
Maximina will take up her position on the 1st of April 2020, and she will be based at our offices in Cape Town, South Africa.
